Jamboree on the Air
"AROUND THE WORLD IN 50 HOURS"

History and Background
Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) is an annual
event where Scouts and Guides around the world link up with each other using
Amateur Radio. It enables them to find out about Scouting in other
places and to make new friends in other groups. The event was founded
in 1958 to repeat the successful radio link up around the world that first
took place at the World Scout Jamboree in Sutton Coldfield the previous
year. 2007 is therefore the 50th anniversary JOTA. The event
takes place on the third weekend in October. This year the theme is
"Around the World in 50 Hours" and it will start
two hours earlier at 22:00 on Friday 19th October so that it will last for
50 hours. You can find out more about JOTA around the world at the the
World Scout
Organisation JOTA pages
GB 50 IDS
Icknield District
will be taking part in the event this year using the special event callsign
GB50IDS. The radio station will be active on the HF amateur radio
bands from 80m to 6m throughout the weekend. The special event
callsign will allow any visitor to send a greetings message using radio to
another station under the supervision of the licensed operators.
Scouts from groups around the district will be visiting the station and it
is hoped that all of them will be able to pass a greetings message to
another JOTA station. There will also be an opportunity for those that
are interested to work towards the Communicator or Radio Communicator
badges.
Jamboree on the Internet
By 1997 the Internet
had become accessible to many people and it was used to extend JOTA to more
participants. Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) was born. The
station will also be taking part in JOTI during the weekend using the email
address gb50ids@ 2007.jotajoti.org. We look forward to hearing from
you as we go "Around the World in 50 Hours"!
