G’ Day everyone

Welcome to the first newsletter for 2007. Here we hope to keep you up to date with the coming and past events of our district. This is your newsletter so if there is something you would like to promote in your group, please send it to me, by whichever means you may choose to use, email or post.

Arlene

Congratulations to Sells Seventh for winning the 2007 Pat O’Hara, on Australia Day 26th Jan.
I had a great time and I am sure the scouts and leaders that attended did to, and also learnt a little bit more about Australia, and why we celebrate this day, and vice versa, I learnt about scouting in the UK.
Thanks for a great night everyone.

My District (Area) back in Australia

Kennedy Region is located in North Queensland and covers an area from Home Hill 100 kilometers to the south to Ingham 100 kilometers to the North and Hughenden about 300 kilometers to the West. The Kennedy Region has 14 groups – visit our website to understand and see what scouts in another country do for scouting and how they will be celebrating this centenary year of scouting. You can also pictures of events that our region held last year 2006.

Or you may want to visit our National web site: http://www.scouts.com.au/

On the map below - you can see where Townsville is, (my home town) if you didn’t already know.

Centenary of Scouting – Events in Australia
  • A World Centenary badge will be worn by 28 million Scouts throughout the world.
  • Scouts Reunited website has been developed to enable scouts and former scouts in Australia register and contact others – literally hundreds of thousands of Australians. www.scoutsreunited.com.au
  • “Gifts for Peace” projects have been undertaken by Scouts throughout the world. Australian Scouts have set up contacts with “Sister Cities” in other countries.
  • Founder’s Day – 22nd February 2007, is also the 150th anniversary of the birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout and Guide movements, will be celebrated by scouts re-affirming the Scout Promise at a public venue such as Parliament House in some states. WA Branch has a City March to Forrest Place, then Youth Awards presentations at Government House. ACT Branch has a Ceremony at Reconciliation Place at 7pm, etc. Victorian Branch will celebrate Founder’s Day on Saturday 24 February 2007 with a public family fun day. The site for the family fun day is the city in the Treasury Gardens.
  • Fly The Flag Competition: - co-ordinated by the Rover Section, this is a competition in which Scouts take the Scout logo and display it as creatively and widely as possible. The winner will be chosen based on a combination of perceived creativity, originality and the amount of exposure that the entry receives.
  • National Youth Week, April 2007: Scouts will meet outside their “normal” places to present a more public view of Scout activities. Up to 1000 prominent citizens across Australia will wear a Scout Scarf on some occasion during the week, to indicate their support for the Scout Movement. (“Scarf Up for Scouting”).
  • August 1st – the official birthday of Scouting, marks the 100th anniversary of the first “experimental” Scout camp, on Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour in England. (Some states will be holding “re-enactment camps”, such as the Western Australian camp on Heirrison Island in the Swan River in Perth.)
  • “Scouting Sunrise” - a world wide activity: Every Scout organisation in the world has been asked to host a function – eg breakfast - in their own location, and re-affirm the Scout Promise at 8am local time. Scouts Australia intends to work with the television program “Sunrise” to publicise this event, hopefully on Sydney Harbour Bridge. A “traditional” Kudu horn, which commenced each day at Brownsea Island, is to be blown at 8am in each state. At 8am Greenwich Mean Time, this will be celebrated in UK, especially at Brownsea Island, and be available for others around the world to “join in” through web cam. World Scouts have been asked to have people on the highest peak in the country at 8am and on that day. (easier for some than others!) Flag / banner displays are to feature in cities and towns during this week.
  • “Come and try Scouting” invitations to young people are to be highlighted during that week.
  • The 21st World Jamboree will be held at Hylands Park, near Chelmsford, England, from 28th July to 7th August. Over 40,000 will attend from every Scout country in the world. Australia will be sending about 100 scouts and leaders.
  • Space Camp in October at Camp Cottermouth in the ACT, not far from the Tidbinbilla Deep Space tracking station. JOTA will be connected to a satellite launched by the European Space Agency and we will be in communication with Sputnik 2, to be launched on 4 October, 50 years after the first Sputnik!
  • Heritage and memorabilia exhibitions are to feature during 2007 and 2008, commencing with a major one at the 2007 Jamboree at Elmore.
  • Centenary Branch and Regional Camps will feature at various times during the year.
  • Special community days will involve additional Scout participation – eg Harmony Day, World Peace Day, Citizenship day ceremonies, etc.
