FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Scout Group opens in Luton16 Beaver Scouts join newly formed Farley Hill Scout Group17th July 1998 -- Five years ago Arthur Cowburn, a local Methodist Minister, had the idea of finding some means of providing something to give adventure and fun to youngsters on Luton's Farley Hill estate. Today that became a reality as the first 16 Beaver Scouts from the newly formed Farley Hill Scout Group were invested. The ceremony was performed by Headquarters representative - John Fogg. He asked the youngsters, "Why did you join the Beavers?" To which they yelled back, "Because it's fun". District Commissioner Alan Goodman and his assistant Suzanne Hodgkinson were responsible for turnings Arthur's idea into practice. Together they recruited Julie Wingfield - a local mum - as Beaver Leader with Mike Holmes as her assistant. Mr Cowburn said, "Five years ago there was nothing for young people to do in the area. Mr Goodman had told me that he was very interested in starting a Scout group here and as they say, the rest is history. This has surpassed my wildest dreams - it is absolutely brilliant".
