FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Beaver Scouts present £1617 to BBC Children in NeedTen years on, Luton Scouts have raised over £20,000 pounds and rising21st February 1999 -- After raising over £1600 for the 1998 BBC Children in Need appeal, a small representative group of Beaver Scouts and Leaders from Icknield District were invited to present their cheque live on the BBC 3 Counties Radio, during the phone in programme, "The Sunday Best Anorak on 21st February. Two Beavers Christopher Lennon and Thomas Ravenhall from 1st Luton Sea Scouts in Icknield District along with their leader Nicola Murray were joined by Assistant District Commissioner Hilary Cupit and Ray Aldous the District Public Relations Officer. After Ray give an account of their fund raising experiences, Thomas and Christopher proudly presented the cheque to the show's presenter - Ian Pearce. Ian recalled some of his fond memories of being a member of the 4th Luton Scout Group. Fund raising for 'Children in Need' has been an on going activity by Scouts in Luton for the past 10 years. It began in 1998 with Scouts from both the Icknield and Lea Valley Districts taking part in a Bus Pull. This activity continued for a further three years and raised a total of £8000. The Beaver Scouts from Icknield inspired by their Commissioner Hilary Cupit continued the good work taking part in a number of sponsored events. These included - Sponsored Skip, Leap frog and a mamoth game of "Twister". In 1994 the Beavers organised a Sing-a-thon in the Arndale Shopping Centre and have continued with this activity since then and have raised a total of £12,638. Impressed by their performance and the amount they raised during the 1998 appeal, BBC 3 Counties invited a small group of Beaver Scouts to sing live on a special Children in Need programme. Six Beaver Scouts and their leaders gave a rendition of "Alice the Camel had three humps" complete with actions which was broadcast on 3 Counties radio to the Eastern region of Britain. Ray Aldous, Public Relations Officer for Icknield District, said that "the young people taking part in these fund raising events took great pleasure knowing that they were helping other people to enjoy a better life and were also fullfilling part of their Scout promise."
