FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1st Luton Sea Scouts Pass Royal Navy InspectionOver 50 years of Admiralty Recognition and still going strong23rd February 1999 -- The 1st Luton Sea Scouts have again proved that they are still one of the best Sea Scout Groups in the country by sailing through their Admiralty inspection with flying colours. On Tuesday 23rd February the Group was put through its paces when they were inspected by Lieutenant Commander Henry Middleton R.N. 1st Luton are one of only 100 Sea Scout Groups in the country that currently have Admiralty recognition. To qualify for this the Group has to be able to demonstrate good seamanship, be well disciplined and smartly turned out. On arrival the inspecting officer was "Piped Aboard" and after the Colours ceremony was completed, he proceeded to inspect every member of the Group - speaking to each boy in turn and enquiring of their personal progress. The Group then continued with a number of activities which included - survival skills (skinning a rabbit, gutting and descaling a fish), mini pioneering, rigging model boats to the required configuration and cooking and serving a meal to a high standard. The Beavers and Cubs cooked mini pancakes using tin can pans heated by candles (with varying degrees of success!). In summing up, Lt. Cmdr. Middleton complimented the Group on it's performance. He stated that they were one of the smartest Groups that he had visited. He said, "Their dress was very good, and their discipline excellent. The piping was good and the programme both imaginative and well presented". He also enjoyed the meal which was cooked well and nicely presented. He concluded by saying that "he would be recommending to his Admiral that the Group continue with their Admiralty Recognition" which they had held continuously since 1948.
