FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE It's the Skipping, Running, Jumping and Falling Over Cub Scout Sports DayExplorer Scouts Invested at Town Centre Event
Two fleet-of-foot Cub Scouts from St Jospeph's Scout Group helped to win a historic first for their Group at the Icknield District Sports day held at William Austin School. For the second year running the Group won the overall award with a massive 298 points. In second place was St Augustine's with 245 points and trailing third was Blenheim Scout Group with 191 points. The event was organised by District Commissioner Karl Collins who also presented the awards. The two Cub Scouts are brothers Eshlui and Akeem Barbour aged eight and nine and they showed a clean pair of heels in event after event. One of the leaders said, "They are natural born runners with the effortless running style of Olympic stars." But winning races was not just about speed and struggling with size 12 wellingtons. It was also about coping with the cold blustery wind and the odd rain shower on a distinctly unseasonal June day. There were 238 entrants for 19 events including a leaders race and a final fun race where everyone took part. The obstacle race sorted out those who could skip, dribble a football around obstructions and tunnel under barriers. It was also a battle for those who could get balls into buckets. Another race had the Cub Scouts dressing up in outsize trousers, a jacket, a hat and enormous wellingtons then running a distance of 50 metres. For some it was a question of how far you could get without falling over. The strict rules of the egg and spoon race were one hand behind the back and definitely no holding the egg with a crafty thumb. Those who did got a five second penalty. But it was the sack race that separated the good jumpers from the sprinters. The winning trick was to hold the sack high and leap down the 50 metre course in about 50 hops without falling over.
