Icknield District Scouts Carol Service

Marsh Farm Scouts share the true meaning of Christmas

10th December 2007 -- 

Sunday saw the Icknield District Scout Council Carol Service , which was held at the Holy Cross Church , Marsh Farm. Hosted by The Manor Scout Group who are based nearby.

Over a hundred members and their families from the District attended supported by regular parishioners. The Service was conducted by Fr. Christopher Perry with the prayers being said by 2 Cub Scouts Michael Richardson and Sydney Comforth.

The theme of the Service was a Christmas Alphabet read by 3 Scouts the letters of which, had been designed and made by Scouts, as well as Cubs and Beavers who displayed them. The Carols included Once In Royal david`s City , See him lying on a bed of straw and Away in a Manger. A collection was made on behalf of Keech Cottage Children`s Hospice .

During the vicar`s address volunteers were asked to choose from a selection of brightly wrapped presents which when opened contained nothing but Newspaper apart from one which was wrapped only in newspaper, this contained the only thing of value a representation of the baby Jesus showing that what is inside is far more important than a piece of glittering wrapping paper.

The district was honoured with a visit from the County Commissioner John Duly and his wife along with the County Chairman Paul Ibbotson.

Martin Wesley the District Commissioner made 6 Service to Scouting Awards 50 years went to Rita Jarman and Roger Lake, with Jean Bandy,Rex Horton and John Worthington collecting their 40 years and finally Jean Mitchell with 10 years.
A further 2 Significant awards were presented by the County Commissioner the Award of Merit to Sue Horton whilst Dave Sutherst collected his Bar to the Award of Merit

To mark the Icknield Districts 40th Anniversary a special award was made to the “Icknield Six” these people were the only members who had been with the District since its inception all those years ago they were :

  • Alec Brown (District president and founding DC)
  • Rex Horton (District Chairman)
  • Jean Bandy (Appointments Secretary)
  • John Woodham (Blenheim Group Contact)
  • Ray Aldous (District Media Manager)
  • Syd Holman (Scout Fellowship member)

Much needed Refreshments were provided afterwards by the Ladies and Gentlemen of the Scout fellowship.
