Long serving Scout leaders are honoured in St Georges day awards

14th April 2008 --

Members of the three Luton Scout Districtss were among many from around the Country to be honoured with awards for devoted service to the Scout Association over many years. Raymond Aldous, Rita Jarman and John Woodham (all long serving members of Icknield District) were amazed to have been awarded the Chief Scout’s personal award: The Silver Wolf. All three have held office for more than fifty years. This Award is the highest honour that members can gain, and this is the first time any member of the Icknield District has gained it.

The Silver Wolf Award - Awarded in recognition of services to Scouting of the most exceptional nature.

Ray Aldous, currently Icknield District Media Manager, first became a leader whilst serving with the R.A.F. in Egypt in 1952. Upon leaving the Service he continued as a Leader with the 7th. Luton and in 1972 became Assistant District Commissioner (ADC) Scouts - a position he held for many years. Ray spent twenty years up until 2004 organising the Annual Luton St. George’s Day Parade. He later became Public Relations Officer for the District and has also held many County Positions; his services were frequently called upon to provide Public Address Equipment for both District and County Events as well as organising Amateur Radio activities.

Rita Jarman`s involvement in Scouting stretches back to 1950 when she was assistant Cub Master with the 31st. Bedfordshire. From 1971 until 1992 she was ADC Cub Scouts with the Icknield District, and afterwards becoming District Cub Scout Leader spending her time helping out with Packs in the District that were short of Leaders. Since her retirement she has held appointments with the District Executive and is now fully committed to working with the Scout Fellowship.

John Woodham has spent most of his Scouting life working with the Blenheim Scout Group, he first took out a Warrant in 1955 and has stayed with them ever since. Apart from his Group involvement John has been very active at both District and County level. 1n 1995 he almost single-handedly organised the three Luton Districts’ involvement in the County Camp also acting as Sub-Camp Leader for them. In the late 1990`s he became ADC Venture Scouts
but always found time to help out when and wherever needed.

Also featuring in the St. Georges Day Awards list are five other Leaders from Luton, all of whom were awarded the Silver Acorn.
The Silver Acorn Award - Awarded in recognition of specially distinguished service.

Jean Bandy has been actively involved in the Icknield District since 1967; at that time a Cub Scout Instructor with her late husband’s pack. Since the mid-1970`s she has worked tirelessly as Secretary of the Icknield District Appointments Sub-Committee, meticulously maintaining all the Leader Records.

Michael Jarman has been involved with Scouting since 1959 when he was a Deep Sea Scout whilst serving in the Royal Navy. Upon leaving the Navy he became involved with the Harlington Troop, then transferring to the Icknield District where he became Group Scout Leader with the St. Andrews Group. He became ADC Venture Scouts and worked very hard within that Section. He eventually took over the running of the District Scout Fellowship, a very busy unit which spends its time assisting the District with organisation of District Events.

Roger Lake`s involvement as a Leader started in 1957 and has continued uninterrupted to the present day. Roger always offered a high level of Scouting to members of the St. Augustine`s Scout Group. As a keen Canoeist, Roger and his team introduced their Scouts to this activity during Summer Camps. Ill-health forced Roger into retirement as an active leader however he is still active as Treasurer of the Icknield Scout Fellowship

Gerald Law started his Scouting with the 2nd St Alban`s Scout Group and progressed to being the ADC Scouts before moving to Luton. Here he became Scout Leader of the Marsh Farm Troop, a position he held before becoming ADC Scouts Icknield. In 1988 Gerald moved over to the Lea Valley District where he became District Commissioner, a position he held for six years. He became an active Scout Fellowship member with Lea Valley and took over the role of Parade Organiser in 2004 from Ray Aldous, at the same time taking over as GSL of the Lea Scout Group.
