FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE St George's Day Celebrations 2008Events to celebrate the patron saint of England and Scouts20th April 2008 -- St George is the patron saint of England and was also chosen as the patron saint of Scouting. Scouts have always paraded through their local villages, towns and cities on the Sunday closest to 23rd April which is St Georges's Day. The Parades usually incorporate an act of worship during which Scouts remember their commitment to the principles of Scouting and renew their promise.
Other attractions included childrens theatre, crossbow shooting and a town crier. On the Sunday afternoon Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and leaders from across the town paraded from St Georges Square past the Town Hall along George Street and then onwards to St Marys Parish Church, Luton Central Baptist and Our lady Help of Christians where they held services which included the renewal of their Promise. The salute was taken at the Town Hall by the Mayor of Luton and Kam Patel who is district commissioner for Someries District.
Ian Pearce of BBC Three Counties Radio attended the service with Icknield District. A recording of parts of the service and a number of interviews was broadcast during the "Here I am to worship" feature on his Melting Pot programme the following week.
