District Newsletter

After a lapse of a few months we are producing once again our own District Newsletter! As with previous publications we can only report on those items of which we are aware. Please therefore let us know what your Colony, Pack, Troop and Explorer Section is planning and what recent activities have been undertaken and any other newsworthy items.

We have recently upgraded our PC to “Windows XP,” allowing us to process photographs and other more sophisticated information.

Please don’t hesitate. Send your News and Views to Don Lowe:- djlowe @ntlworld. com

Someries District’s new DC

As a result of Brian Goodchild retiring, the task of appointing a person to replace him as D.C. had to be put in place.

The process is quite complicated and lengthy. The District Chairman was required by the County Commissioner, via the ACC Development, to appoint a “Search Committee” comprising a number of variously qualified adults. The committee was obliged to contact every member of the “District Scout Council” requesting recommendations for the appointment . From these replies the “Search Committee” prepared a short list and submitted it to the County Commissioner.

The result of these recommendations favoured three people one of whom was Kamlesh Patel. (Beaver Scout Leader from 3rd Someries).

The County Commissioner has now confirmed Kam as the new District Commissioner for Someries (Luton) District.

We welcome Kam and we wish him every success in his new appointment.

A word from the District Commissioner

My first task is to ensure that all Groups in the District continue to run and hopefully flourish with both adults and young people.

I think that we should have a web site dedicated to us. This is being developed by a work colleague who has offered her skills and services to keep it up to date.

Having visited all the Groups, except the Explorer Unit, a few issues have been raised and I have taken steps to deal with them as soon as possible. As in many cases I have to wait on someone else to respond.

However, this year is a settling in period for me and therefore it is with regret that there will be no District Camp or Swimming Gala, unless there is someone out there who wishes to organise either of these events and they will have my full support. I am having to deal with a steep learning curve and hope that this will soon even up.

In conclusion, I would ask that all changes in circumstances to individuals contact details be notified to me so that I can update the District file!

I should also be made aware of all events where members of Someries District get involved, so that I am prepared for any enquires from the media or anyone else!

Forthcoming events

St. George’s Day Parade and service 23rd April 2006.
Kent Challenge 2006
on 6th May 2006.
Beaver Six trip
on 21st May 2006 to Upton Park.

Yours in Scouting
Kam Patel.
(District Commissioner)

The letter advising the change, sent by the Chief Commissioner for England, Peter Barnes, is confident that John will be “spearheading further growth and development in Bedfordshire with new ideas and initiatives.”
  • Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders from 24th Someries Scout Group were introduced to the Prince of Wales, during his “Royal” tour of Luton’s Dallow Road Community Centre. 2007 Jamboree
( A note from “The Friends of the Jamboree)

2007 is a special year for Scouting as it marks the centenary of our growth into the largest youth movement in the world. One of the highlights of the year is that 40,000 scouts from around the world are coming to the UK for the 21st World Scout Jamboree. In Bedfordshire 36 Scouts and 4 Leaders have had the honour of being chosen to represent their County and Country at this amazing event, which will be held from 27th July to 8th August. As part of our fund raising efforts we would like to invite you to become a “Friend of the Jamboree” for the small sum of £25.00.

Brian Goodchild retires

Brian, after 10years as D.C. for Someries District has retired. Brian tells us that he will still stay in touch, as both he and Janet are active members of the District Fellowship.

To mark and celebrate Brian’s retirement a party was arranged at Luton town’s Cricket pavilion in Wardown Park, on Friday 10th March. All groups were represented with nearly eighty people attending making sure that Brian had a really memorable party.

On behalf of the District, from donations received from every Group, Brian was presented with a digital Video camera. For supporting Brian over many years Janet was given a bouquet of flowers.

A Word from the Scout Shop.

We will be delivering the new 2006 catalogues and shop opening dates to GSL’s in the near future. Most of the prices have not changed since the last catalogue. There are a lot of gift items and things for the Jamboree. We are currently selling Smart trousers for £12.50 a pair. This is only while stocks last. The activity trousers are not reduced in price.

Beaver Scout Report

The annual Draughts competition took place on Friday 3rd March 2006 at Ross park. Each Colony was allowed to enter four Beavers and twenty three Beavers in total took part in the competition. After a hard fought final between Ewen Finnie (1st Someries) and James Knubley (3rd Someries) Ewen emerged as the winner. Thank you to everyone who helped with the event.

The District Beaver Camp fire took place on Friday 24th March 2006. There were 91 Beavers attending and the Beavers were extremely well behaved and in great voice. My thanks go to Mike Jones and the Explorer Scouts and Pauline Dodd for making the drinks. We did miss Adam Wise rendition of “My name’s Joe” but otherwise we had a great evening.

The District outing to the Natural History Museum took place on Sunday 2nd April 2006. We took a 70 seat coach to the Museum and arrived when it opened at 11am. Unfortunately the world and his wife also turned up at the museum at 11am., and it took about 25 minutes to get in. The reason for the long wait was for security and everyone’s bags had to be searched before they went in. For some unknown reason, when they saw us in uniform they just let us through without searching us and there were 67 of us in the group!!

We all split up into colonies and went round the Museum, all starting on a separate floor. One of the most interesting floors was the basement, not only because we had lunch there but also because of the hands on section. I have never known the Beavers so quiet as they concentrated on studying the exhibits. Unfortunately we were only allowed thirty minutes in there. We did find some stuffed Beavers but they were members of the 24th Someries after lunch!

We had a “whale” of a time in the Mammals Gallery, went walking with Dinosaurs and survived the Earthquake room.

All in all we had a “Great Day.”

Denise O’Hara.
