Someries NewsDecember 2002
I am pleased that everyone in Someries District has embraced the new Scouting programme so wholeheartedly. Our young people are enjoying the many varied activities which you offer them each week and I should like to thank you all, on their behalf for your continued commitment to "Good Scouting." We have a flourishing Explorer Scout Unit under the care of and guidance of Mick Jones and Kevin Philpott. It is a District Unit to be proud of ; they have achieved much in a short space of time. A large number of ex Venture Scouts now Leaders in the 18-25 age group have helped form the nucleus of the County Scout Network. Anyone interested should contact the County Office on 01234 826079, e-mail bedscout@talk21.com or visit the county website. I hope you all enjoyed the Jubilee Camp at Henlow, I know I did even if it was a little tiring! I was thrilled to receive acknowledgement from Buckingham Palace to say that the Queen would see our camp badge after the end of her Jubilee tour. also our camp badge was used to decorate the Jubilee article in the November issue of Scouting Magazine and that we were given a prominent mention. Finally as the end of 2002 approaches I should like to wish Seasons Greetings to you all and a happy and peaceful New Year. With camp set up, shopping done, and supper downed the talk was how well the Explorers would do in the competition. Morning dawned, and off they went to shoot. By the end of the week end all had taken part in various types of shooting, with one of our younger Explorer Scouts coming second in the Junior Air Rifle Competition. The Explorer Scout who helps at 2nd Someries Cubs was awarded a medal. For someone who has not really shot before, she deserves our congratulations and encouragement to go further. It was evident from the comments made by Group Scout Leaders, and Scouters I/C, that the dedication and support to scouting by Leaders, and Helpers in Someries District is still very strong. With very few exceptions every Leader has completed training or is in the process of the undertaking courses. The new sectional training programme has in the most part been welcomed, however it seems that the Scout section manuals may lack detailed information. Numbers of youngsters in scouting in the District was reported as being good. There is a continuing shortage of Leaders in all sections. Return to contents
