District Headquarters

All the work associated with the refurbishment and redecoration of Ross Park Scout Headquarters at Applecroft Road is now complete. During the past few months it has been a trial for both users and the District Executive, as the contractor failed to keep promises on starting and completion dates. Now with the hall, kitchen and store room finished , let us take pride in the building and continue to use it for both Scouting and private activities.

We would like to express our thanks to those organisations who contributed to our building fund: The National Lottery, Samuel Whitbread, Leslie Sell Trust and the Bedfordshire Community Funding Initiative.

Countywide Outlook

The June edition of the Countywide Outlook is now available to view on the internet. (www.bedfordshirescouts.org.uk).

It would be helpful if the County office would issue a list of dates as to when the latest editions of the "County Outlook" will be available to view on their web site! Perhaps they might send an email to an agreed mailing list.

As a reminder to those of you who do not have access to the internet, copies of the Countywide Outlook can be obtained by sending a stamped self addressed envelope to the county office at Bromham.

Beaver News

St. George's Day celebration. Held in the Library Square, Luton on 27th April 2002. The Luton Town Partnership organised the day and the Beaver Scouts decided to make roses out of red serviettes, green crepe paper and pipe cleaners, dyed green. As usual I left it to a District official to come up with the idea of making the roses simple enough so that a Beaver Scout could make them.

On the day twenty Beaver Scouts turned up from various Colonies in the Someries District. They made hundreds of roses and handed them out to the general public. The Beavers were very well behaved and were a credit to Someries District.

My thanks go to the Leaders who sent Beaver Scouts to the Library Square and who stayed to help me during the morning session.

District Beaver Scout Fun Day 19th May 2002. We held a fun day at Haverings to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. There were 125 Beaver Scouts from all 8 Colonies on a very warm sunny day at Haverings. Every Colony had to bring a base with them for the morning session . The bases ranged from safety darts to a member of 16th Someries and an ADC (in stocks) having wet sponges thrown at them. Lunch consisted of sausage or fish fingers, mash and beans. Ice cream and jelly was served for afters.

The afternoon session started off with an assault course. I wont say who won, but part of the course involved going through a small tunnel!! After they all had a go, the Beavers then had to complete the assault course carrying a container full of water. They were also attacked by a man on a mission carrying a very large water pistol. The day ended with a camp fire and songs. The weather was fantastic, we could not have asked for a better day.

Someries Beaver fun day 2002My thanks go to the Leaders for spending another day with the Beavers. To Norma and Corks for the very tasty lunch to the Venture Scouts for helping out and to everyone at the 2nd Someries for helping me set up in the morning and clearing up at the end.

Yet again the District Beaver Scout Leader has organised a great day for the Beavers, and her thanks to all who helped are noted. However, without her planning there would have been no day at all, and her own enthusiasm and energy guaranteed a successful event. District Chairman

Someries District Queen's Jubilee Camp

Flags from around the Commonwealth at the Jubilee campThe Camp was held at the Boyd Field in Henlow during the weekend 28th to 30th June. All Groups from Someries District were there and what a great time they all had. To emphasise the Jubilee occasion most Groups had decorated their sites with Union flags and bunting.

Today's emphasis was placed on the endurance and skills of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as they competed in a wide range of games and activities. Walking round the site we were faced with an array of bases. We witnessed:-

  • Youngsters attempting to knock each other off an elevated pole using bags filled with straw. Fortunately a soft landing had been prepared for the person to be knocked off.
  • Cubs and Scouts racing against each other with one heavy oversized "boot" on one foot, attempting to retrieve extremely large cardboard cutlery, before turning and running back to the start/finish line.
  • Roger Swan instructing teams of three Cub scouts how to walk with their feet being placed into boots that had been fixed, very close together to a plank of wood. All legs had to rise and fall in unison!
  • Wet Sponge Throwing at Someries Jubilee CampCubs and Scouts racing past other youngsters who were intent on giving them a soaking by throwing wet sponges at them. It was difficult to judge who was the wettest, runners or throwers.
  • Queen Boadicea would have been happy to have witnessed the modern day chariot race. Baseball capped young drivers urged their adult, replacement horses, to run faster and faster! We failed to see who won the event!
  • Finally we came across the District Fellowship supervising a "Jousting" competition.
  • Close to the Headquarters block, a brightly coloured "Bouncy castle" was being rocked on its foundations as half a dozen Beaver Scouts jumped up and down inside.

WHAT A DAY !!!

A word from the D.C.

I must write to thank all of the Leaders and parent helpers who came along and made the camp so successful for all of the young people who attended. The weather stayed fine all weekend, which really helped all the activities go so well. It is really good to see the whole District joining in and working together especially the new Explorer Scout Section. They seemed to have gelled together as a group in a really short space of time. I hope they enjoyed their first camp together. Lastly I must say thank you to the District Team for their planning and running the camp especially Robert- how does he get all those games and craft materials in his car? Norma Watson has a few spare Jubilee Camp badges on sale at the Badge Shop for £1.00 each. Lastly as the summer holidays approach I hope you all enjoy a much needed break and come back refreshed and ready to deliver the new Section Programmes to our young people. Brian Goodchild DC.

PS I have several items of lost property from the camp including baseball caps, jumpers , a battery operated toothbrush and toothpaste, a mobile phone charger and a leather GSL badge which I would like to return to their rightful owners as soon as possible please!

Criminal Records Bureau Clearance

As from June 1st this year all adults over 18 who work with young people must be cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau. This is now the law and applies to all over 18s involved in Scouting. The new form is available from the District Secretary and will take slightly longer to fill in than the old Scout Association clearance form. They are individually numbered and cannot be photocopied. Once they have been filled in, they must be returned to the District Secretary who will record the name and ID number on a separate form, on which she will receive the reply as to whether the person is accepted as suitable to work in the Scout Movement. As I've already said, this is now the law and we must comply. If you have any questions about this, please ring the District Commissioner or the District Secretary.
