Silver Acorn for Cynth

We offer our congratulations to Cynth Southerst, (District Scout Shop Manager), who, at the County Scout Annual General meeting, was presented with the prodigious Silver Acorn.

This award was made on behalf of the Chief Scout, by the County Commissioner, to Cynth for her work as County Scout Archivist and her continuing dedication and hard work at the Someries District Scout Shop. For regular visitors to our Headquarters, Cynth Sutherst can be found on Tuesday evenings and most Saturday mornings providing an unrivaled service for the sale of Scout uniforms and other Scouting items and equipment.

The profits from the Scout Shop make a significant contribution to Someries District funds and to the Groups.

Tree problems at Ross Park

Concern has, for some time, been expressed regarding the poor state of the trees in the grounds of Ross Park. Some have become diseased and others badly overgrown and dangerous.

An informal inspection recently undertaken by the Local Authority indicates serious problems with the Poplars and Horsechestnut trees.

A detailed examination of the trees is to be undertaken and remedial action taken. This will result in some trees being removed and others severely cut back.

A Lifetime in Scouting

We have just received an e-mail letter from Steve Valentine (24th Someries), to tell us that Reg Brett has recently been awarded a long Service Award by the District Commissioner. This award was presented at the 24th Someries Annual General Meeting.

In Steve's words:- "Reggie is a stayer and has had several "commands" in his time and he is still heavily relied upon as an ASL. He is there every week without fail, not bad after 40 odd years, most would be fed up and bored by now."

Steve Valentine

In view of Reg Brett's long service, he was asked to summarise his years in Scouting:- Reg sent this note, which we have edited slightly: however we sure as you read it, you will be impressed with the wide and varied Scouting activities in which Reg has been involved.

"Reg This is your Life"

Reg Brett
A Lifetime of Scouting

Reg was Born in 1941 at Richmond Hill, Luton. At 8 years of age he joined St. Christophers Scout Group as a Wolf Cub.At eleven Reg moved house to Farley Hill estate and joined St. Michaels/St George Scout Group as a Cub and then as a Scout. Skip Mayes was Scoutmaster at that time. In 1957 Reg was on the move again, this time to Vauxhall Park estate. He joined St.Saviours "Blue Foxes" Scout Troop. At fifteen years old Reg started work at Vauxhall Motors and joined St. Annes Scout Troop as a Senior Scout. After two years Reg moved to Luton Northern District (now Someries) as a Rover Scout. In 1961 he took out a warrant with 38th Luton Putteridge Scout Group as an Assistant Scout Master.

At the age of twenty five, Reg in conjunction with Bob Montgomery started the Round Green Venture Unit. After spending over ten years with the Unit Reg was appointed Assistant District Commissioner Venture Scouts, within Someries District. He held this appointment for six years and then transferred to 24th Someries (St.Annes) Scout Troop as an Venture Scout Leader. At the age of sixty two Reg is still at the 24th and to quote him. "Is still going strong."

In addition to his warranted service Reg has listed a few other scouting activities which he has, over many years, been involved with:-

  • Service Team with Rover Scouts at Ross Park.
  • Someries District Rep., on Chalton camp site management committee.
  • District executive committee.
  • County Venture Scout Board Committee member.

Cub Scout Section Report
(An e-mail report from Sharon).

All the Cubs looked smart at the St.George's Day Parade and again there was a good turn out of packs. The colour parties paraded their flags smartly and well done to the Cubs that took part in the Service.

Most of the Cub Packs have been to camp this year or are to go over the next couple of months. A whole array of activities has been enjoyed by the Cubs, even with the changeable weather we are receiving. I know of a few Groups who have had a number of canvases to dry out.

On September 19th I am holding a cub fun day at Henlow for cubs that have not been to camp before, canoeing, archery and shooting as well as other activities that will be provided. If your Cub pack has not received details on these please contact me.

Scout Section Report
(from ADC Scouts).

Not very much to report, as, due to family illness, I've not been out and about as I had planned to do this year.

No one has called me with any problems so I'm assuming that everything is alright with the Troops.

Only one thing to remind Troop Leaders:- This year's fire-fighters badge course is in September and I need all the Scouts' names beforehand to give to the Fire Service. Any Troop still to do this, can they pass on to me as soon as possible any names of Scouts wishing to attend the course.

Only one other thing to add, no make that two:
  1. Scout Leaders: if you have any Scouts about to finish their Chief Scout's Award please can I be informed so that I can interview them before the award is presented. Many thanks.
  2. Any Troops going on camp over the Summer, please have a safe time and enjoy yourselves. It would be nice to know where you are going.

Asst. County Commissioner for Youth Programme.
(an e-mail from Russell Ireson, via Janet Goodchild introducing himself to Bedfordshire Scouts).

Among the duties that I carry out is representing Beds Scouts on the Executive Committee of Bedfordshire and Luton Council for voluntary Youth Services. BLCVYS is set up to help all young people, not just Scouts right across the whole County. BLCVYS has quite a lot to offer including Grants, Training Courses Seminars and Events but it is quite hard getting information out to grass roots level. I disseminate as much information as possible to members of the County Team, District Commissioners and individual members whom I know, but this probably reaches less than 5% of the Beds Scout population. In the last six months BLCVYS have awarded £4,439 in small grants (Max £500) to Bedfordshire youth organisations of which £2,060 went to Scout Groups. The message is reaching some parts of our organisation but I feel that the majority of Scouters in the County are unaware of BLCVYS.

I have therefore decided to set up an e-mailing list that any Scouter in Bedfordshire can join. This will enable me to forward any information on grants, equipment or activities that may be on offer, quickly and efficiently direct to the heart of grass roots Scouting in Bedfordshire.

If you would like to be included in this E-mailing list simply e-mail me with you name and address. russell.ireson@ntlworld. com

Are You the Scout Photographer of the Year?
( An e-mail from Scout Headquarters).

Jessops, the sponsor of the Scout Photographer Badge, have launched a fantastic competition for Scouts aged ten and half - fourteen. To be in for a chance to win a Kodak digital camera, you need to take photographs that express "What Scouting means to me."

We are looking for entries which show a personal view of being a scout, whether it's a self portrait, an image of friends, life at camp, still life, fun, learning, new hobbies....the only limit is your imagination.

How to enter. Scouts can enter a maximum of four prints - which can be colour or black and white. The deadline for entries is Friday 24th September 2004 and should be sent to: Scout Photographer of the Year Competition, The Scout Association, Gilwell Park, London. E4 7QW

The "Yesteryear Page" featured in the Luton News.

We could not help but notice the half page photograph of Scouts and Guides, which was published in July 21st., 2004 edition of The Luton News.

The photograph submitted to the newspaper by Cynth Sutherst, shows Scouts, Guides and Leaders seated in the Vauxhall Motors Recreation Club in Luton. Cynth would like to know what the event was and when it took place.

Cynth believes the big gathering may have been connected with the Coronation in 1953 or the 50th anniversary of the Scout movement in 1957.

In addition to Cynth Sutherst and the Luton News wanting an answer, it would be brilliant if we could publish details of the event in the next District Newsletter.

Please phone or e-mail me with your memories of this event!
