Swimming Gala Report

This year’s event was held at Bath Road swimming complex on Saturday 12th March. It was supported by every Group in the District and provided an evening’s enjoyment to swimmers and spectators alike. Our thanks go to all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who took part and all those leaders, parents and members of the District Team who helped on the day.

With continuing doubts over the future of the swimming pool, perhaps this is the last District gala to be held at Bath Road. Let’s hope not! The results are listed below:-

Beaver Scout Report

(An e-mail report from Denise O'Hara)

Draughts Competition, took place on Friday 25th February 2005 at Ross Park. Each Colony entered four Beavers and twenty Beaver Scouts took part in total. The two finalists were a Beaver Scout from 19th Someries and a Beaver from 1st Someries. After a hard fought final, the Beaver from 19th Someries emerged as the winner. The standard from all the competitors was particularly high and everyone went home with a certificate.

District Swimming gala was held on Saturday 12 March 2005 at Bath Road
with swimmers and non-swimmers taking part for the first time in many years. The overall Trophy was won by 3rd Someries. Congratulations to all who took part.

Camp Fire took place on Friday 18th March 2005 at Ross Park. There were 91 Beavers attending from all the Colonies. The Beavers were extremely well behaved and in great voice. My thanks go to Mick Jones and Peter Crowson for the campfire and Norma Farish and Pauline Dodd for making the drinks. I cannot end without thanking Adam Wise for an amazing rendition of “My names Joe” which rounded off a great evening. Definitely one for the campfire at Henlow.

District Beaver Scout Fun Day to be held at Haverings Guide Centre on Saturday 9th July 2005

St Georges Day

This year’s parade and service took place on Sunday 17th April.
Luton was awash with colour as Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Leaders assembled with standards in St. George’s Square and walked in the sunshine, past the Town Hall, where the D.C and ACC Gerry Pope took the salute. Their walk took them through the town centre to attend services at the Central Baptist Church and St. Mary’s Parish Church.

Someries District together with many welcome guests from Lea Valley, filled the Parish Church with Scouts, Leaders, parents and friends. The service was conducted by Rev. Canon Nicholas Bell. It provided an opportunity for all Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to renew their promise and for the District Commissioner, Brian Goodchild to invest a Cub Scout and make a number of presentations, the most significant being a Medal of Merit to Denise O’Hara.
Congratulations Denise!

Mayor's Award for Citizenship

We could not help but notice the article in February 2nd edition of The Luton News, in which 19th Someries Scout Group was presented, along with others with The Luton Mayor’s Citizens award. The citation reads:-

19th Someries Scout Group. For its excellent work in the community, undertaking various projects to mark the Group’s 70th birthday, including tea and games at an elderly people’s home and supplying plants and garden maintenance at Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice. The Group has also restored a wildlife area with a pond at St. Matthew’s School, making it safe for children to enjoy and learn about natural habitats. To finance these projects the boys have taken part in several fund raising projects.

Well done 19th a credit to the Group, the District and to Scouting as a whole!

News In Brief

  • 3rd Someries are hosting a “Jungle Book” show to raise money and awareness of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund).
  • The District camp will held over the weekend of 10th-12th June 2005 at Henlow. Although the format will be similar to previous years, the theme will be a “Teddy Bears Picnic.”
  • Norma Watson has received a big “Thank you” from Scouters in Harpenden, for the donation of obsolete badges. The badges have been taken to Africa.
  • Explorer Scouts. It is reported that numbers in the section are down. A presentation is being worked on to take out to Troops, to encourage Scouts to join the Explorer Scout Section.
  • The collection from the St. Georges Day Service, at the request of the County has been donated to the “Tsunami appeal fund,” to help rebuild Scout groups in the affected areas. The District Executive felt that we should not desert our local charities, therefore a fund raising appeal to support Keech Cottage Hospice will be made at the District camp.

Postscript from the webmaster

Eddie (Ted) Lamb

It is with sadness that we report on the death of Eddie Lamb, who was previously a Leader in Icknield District and who has for many years also run the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) radio station at the Ross Park headquarters.  He will also be known to many for his camp cooking with 3rd Someries.
