A word from the District Commissioner
Someries District Annual General meeting will be held on the 6th June 2001. At this
meeting the District Executive Committee is nominated, voted for and will for
the next twelve months be responsible for running the affairs of the District.
It would be great if we could see some new
faces on the Executive. It is a busy
committee, with many diverse and interesting ongoing projects. A few examples
of the District Executive work during
the past twelve months are highlighted:
Overseeing the programme of refurbishment to the District Headquarters,
and preparing and applying for further grants to fund the work required to be
carried out on the interior of the building . The major task of distributing
and assembling District Census returns
has been completed. A small
sub-committee convenes regularly to review Leader Warrants and to have an
introductory chat with new Leaders/Helpers. Through the offices of the Executive,
records are maintained, District Newsletters are compiled, printed and sent
out. The Badge and Scout shop are also an integral part of the District,
providing through the sale of scouting
uniforms, equipment and badges, funds
towards the support of District activities and projects.
In the opening paragraph we made a plea for more people to join the committee and help with managing District affairs. You don’t have to have any scouting experience: all that we ask is that you have a keen interest in Scouting and with it an interest in the development of young people in Someries District.

A word from the District
Commissioner
The County Commissioner is retiring at the
County AGM on the 11th July. I’m sure that we would like to thank him for his
help and support during his appointment and to congratulate him on being
awarded the Bar to the Silver Acorn.
The new County Commissioner will be the ACC/AT,
well known to all Leaders, Helpers and Administrators who have attended
training courses. We send our congratulations and best wishes.
Foot and Mouth disease. As the Foot and mouth
crisis seems to be coming to an end many local camp sites are now reopening
which I hope will allow you all to get back to some normal scouting for this
time of the year, so please get your PC forms in as quickly as possible.
New Uniform. For those of you who have ordered
your new uniforms from the Scout Shop the expected delivery date is early July.
For young members there is a two year change over period, I would just like to
ask that when anyone changes that they change completely and do not mix and
match old and new style uniforms.
St. Georges Day. Thank you all for turning out in such numbers on a chilly St.
Georges Day parade and service. Without exception everyone on parade was very
smart and a credit to Group and District. The proceeds from the collection
taken during the service have been
donated to Keech Cottage Childrens Hospice and to local charity
supporting homeless people in Luton. During the service time was set aside to
conscecrate the new District flag donated to Someries District by the wife of
the first DC of Someries District.
Presentations: It was with pleasure that I
presented: Warrants to the new
ADC/Fellowship, three to Assistant Cub
Scout Leaders, one to an Assistant Scout Leader and one to a Helper.
Instructors certificates for rifle shooting to five members of the
District Venture Unit, and also two Venture Scout Awards. The District Flag to 3rd Someries Scout
Group for their outstanding
achievements during the past year. A ten year service award and an Honoury
Scouters Certificate. Cub Scouts
Adventure Awards to eleven Cub Scouts.

The District Beaver Scout Leader reported on a
very successful Beaver Scout camp fire and sing-song, held at Ross Park on the
evening of Friday 23rd March.
Someries Beaver Scouts, with their Leaders manned a stand in Luton’s St. Georges Square
on Saturday 28th April, to join with scouts from Icknield District and other
local interest groups, to celebrate England’s patron Saint, St. George. This
event was organised by the Luton Tourist Information Centre and was arranged
after the success of last years Luton town millennium event. The Beaver Scouts
from Someries District set up a collage of
St. George and the Dragon. This collage has been framed and can now be
seen hanging in the District HQ.
Luton Borough Council would like to make this
an annual event.
The Someries District BSL offers her thanks to all those Leaders who supported her on the day.
