Beaver News

A report form the Beaver Scout Leader of the 26th Someries

I thought I would let you know what the 26th Someries Beaver Scouts did as part of their "Caring Badge".

In October the Beaver Scouts planted hyacinth bulbs. We placed them in a cool dark place and waited for them to show signs of life.

Just before Christmas we took one of the pots of hyacinths to the "Help the Aged" home at Bramingham Park, so that the residents could have some early spring colour to cheer them up during the long winter months. The remaining pot of bulbs we took to the Keech Cottage Hospice, where they care for terminally ill children, who would hopefully also take a little cheer from the floral display.

We also took along a Christmas card made and signed by all the Beavers.

District Beaver Party

( An e-mail report from the Beaver Scout Leader of the 19th Someries)

On Saturday 22nd February Someries District Beavers got together for a belated Christmas party, at Raynham Way Community Centre.  50 boys and girls turned up for two hours of fun. The afternoon started out with games, teams of boys and girls running and hopping against each other or passing a balloon. That was followed by an hour's entertainment. Magic, fun and games were on the menu and of course we had the magician's rabbit. Every youngster was given a balloon in various shapes: swords, dogs etc.

When the entertainer was finished we sat down for refreshments and a light snack, before resuming our games. Everyone had fun and the behaviour of all children was something all Leaders could be proud of. A word of thanks to a Beaver Scout Leader from 24th Someries and all those other Leaders present for their time and effort in making this a successful afternoon.

South West Herts Narrowboat project

(Brenda Rose sent this newspaper cutting, from the Abbots Langley Villager).
We have included a small section which might be of interest to Groups and to the District Explorer Scouts section.

"Where the river Gade flows into the Grand Union canal there is moored a magnificent 72ft, 12 berth canal boat which is available for use by youth and community groups. The boat spends eight months of the year, mainly at weekends, as a floating home for parties of Scouts, Guides, Cubs, youth clubs and many other types of community groups. During their time afloat they have the opportunity to learn to live and work as a team, to explore the rich heritage of the canal system and to experience the peace and tranquillity of the countryside."
