Cub Scout News

(An e-mail report from the District Cub Scout Leader).

Time Teams "Big Dig." 26th June at Someries District Headquarters, members of District Cub Packs took part in the TV Channel 4 sponsored national "Big Dig." Throughout the country test pits were being dug. Any archaeological artefacts that were discovered were recorded. A national data base was created listing all archaeological items that were found in each area of the country.

All the District Cub Packs were invited to come along to the "Big Dig" afternoon and have a go at digging in the test pit. Sieving through the soil which was taken out or washing the artefacts found. As well as the test pit the Cubs also had access to the web site where they could talk to others about their finds or test pit, matching up any artefacts they may have found with picture records and pull up maps of the local area past and present. The Cubs also took part in an array of activities, which lead them to their Local Knowledge Badge. The day was hot and sunny but all the Cubs had a super time and the event was a great success.

Someries District were lucky enough to have a member of the Dunstable Archaeological Club attend and help us with our dig. We also had a visit from the Channel 4 "Time Team" camera crew. We appeared on TV in the evening show of events around England. Although over thirty minutes footage was taken we only had two minutes claim to fame.

My thanks to all the Leaders who helped on the day!

District Cub Scouts Fun Day at Boyd Memorial Camp site Henlow.

September 28th. On arrival at Henlow the forty Cub Scouts were split into four teams and they rotated through the day around four activities: climbing, shooting, shelter building and mapping. For the most part the weather was good, however just before lunch it started to rain. This meant the team who were climbing had to stop and so they started collecting wood for the fires that were needed to cook lunch on. The cubs cooked sausages, beans and mash, and then it was off to go to the next activity. The day was a great success and all the Cubs got together to meet other Cubs and made new friends during the day. I would like to thank all the Leaders and Helpers from the 19th, 16th and 2nd Someries for helping the day run smoothly as well as Adam Wise and Trevor Sharp for giving up their Sunday to instruct the shooting and climbing.

District Cub Scout Conker Competition.
The District HQ Manager kindly organised the Cub Scout Conker competition this year. It was held at Someries District Headquarters on Monday 20th October. Representatives from all but two packs in the District took part. The winner was a Cub Scout from 3rd Someries.

1st Tigers meal.
On the 2nd July I was invited to attend the 1st Tigers meeting. They were working on their cooking badge. All the Cubs parents were invited to the meal where the Cubs had prepared and cooked a two course meal and were providing waiter service. The Cubs had been growing the vegetables and salads around the back of their hut and had taken care to keep them watered through the hot summer days that we were lucky enough to have. The tables were decorated with flowers and table clothes and we even witnessed the boys washing up.

Congratulations to all the Cubs at the 1st Tigers for achieving their Cook Badge.

Beaver Bronze

On Sunday 5th October the District Commissioner was invited to present Chief Scout Bronze Awards to two Beaver Scouts from the 24th Someries. The DC attended the Group's monthly Church parade at St.Annes Church where he presented the two Beaver Scouts with their hard earned awards. To earn the award the two boys had to gain their outdoor challenge, which they did in March when they both attended the joint "sleepover" at Haverings GuideCentre with the 19th Someries. They then worked towards their Discovery Challenge. To get this challenge they both found out how a torch works and how to dial 999. They also tie-dyed a handkerchief each and sampled different food and found out which was good for us and which was bad. Over a six week period both undertook personal challenges. Sam's was to improve his martial arts and to show his improvement: Sam gained his yellow belt. Michael's challenge was to improve his ability in swimming: he set himself a target and reached his next swimming level. Well done to both Sam and Michael, as the awards are believed to be the first presented in the District to a Beaver Scout.

Explorer Scout Report

The Explorer Scout Leader reports that the District Explorer Scouts are thirty five in number. Sixteen attended the summer camp at Kingsdown, and they all had a very good week. Entrance to Dover Castle cost £64.00, but they all enjoyed it. Thirteen Explorer Scouts attended a canoe course at Phasels Wood, four gained their two star BCU and eight their first star; one Explorer Scout will retake the test shortly. The Junior Leaders presentation and BBQ at Henlow went very well. The Explorer Scouts are planning to attend the winter camp at Gilwell and have continued with their crewing activities throughout the summer.

Someries District Swimming Gala 2003

This year's gala took place at Luton's Bath Road Swimming complex on Saturday 1st November 2003.
The event attracted entries from every Group within the District, although numbers were down on last year's entries, due in part to Firework displays at home and around the town.

The Swimmers supported by parents and friends gave their all in a very competitive event.

 The overall winners were:

Beaver Scouts 2nd Someries
Cub Scouts 7th Someries
Scouts 24th Someries
Explorer Scouts Someries Unit

A full breakdown of results and scores are online here. The District Commissioner expressed his thanks to all those people who gave their time and effort to make such a successful 2003 gala.
