Editorial Comment.

In this edition we take space to emphasise the need for us all to be on the lookout,  not only for  young people to swell our ranks, but also for  adults to become Helpers and Leaders.

We have often heard on the local radio appeals for help from various youth and voluntary organisations. Let us add our voices to these appeals. We ask through this article that every Leader and Helper approach parents, guardians and friends of  Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts, to give some of their time to help at the Group.

Now that this Newsletter is available on the world wide web we hope that it will be read by ex-scouters and adults who have an interest in youth work and, in particular, Scouting. To make an enquiry see the contacts below:

Scout Shop

Most of the new uniforms are available now, although some of the most popular items are still in short supply.  Please be patient with us if the item that you require is not in stock. There is a change in the key elements for the Scout Section. School trousers are no longer uniform. The new scout and explorer uniform consists of a shirt, scarf with woggle and navy combat trousers with a scout belt. New novelty items are being introduced and we are trying to keep as many as possible in stock

If your Group has a lot of uniforms to buy, we will be happy to come along to your headquarters to supply parents direct.

Cub Scout Hero

It is a pleasure that we are able to report on an act of bravery by one of Someries District Cub Scouts. This episode came to light after a Cub Scout from the 19th Someries wrote an account of his holiday as part of his Communicators Badge.

The incident took place on the last day of  the family holiday in the Loire Valley region of France. A young Dutch boy whilst swimming in the Camp pool got into difficulties. The Cub Scout from 19th Someries, swam to him and brought the boy to the side of the pool. The Dutch boy had stopped breathing and was unconscious. With the help of a first aider who cleared the boys airways and with the Cubs father who continued with artificial resuscitation, the youngster was saved from certain death.

Well done to a Cub Scout that certainly made good use of his training and lived up to his promise to "Do his best"!

BT Community Connections

Someries District made application to BT Community Connections for an award available to all voluntary groups. An Assistant Cub Scout Leader in the District was alert enough to spot the scheme and submit the application.

Now Someries District is delighted to hear that it has been awarded a computer and a cheque towards the costs associated with Internet use.

Many thanks to an observant Leader!
