Someries News

October 2002

IN THIS ISSUE:

Quote (from the parent of a Cub Scout).
I was talked into going to Someries District Camp. I didn't want to go, but having spent the weekend there, it was "brilliant!"

Editorial Comment

Concern is being expressed by District Officers and the DC., that many Groups although well meaning, are still accepting parents of youngsters and other volunteers to help at Beaver, Cub and Scout activity evenings and also to help supervise children when they are taken on outings, without these people first being cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau.
In view of so many recent cases of child abuse and other more serious events which have made newspaper headlines, it is imperative that before Leaders accept adult help, they submit names and the necessary paperwork to the District Commissioner, who will in turn pass it on to the CRB office for clearance. Until the reply is received no-one should be involved with children.

A notice reminding Leaders of this procedure will be put on the notice board at Ross Park and "hand out" slips are to be given out at the Scout Shop to all new parents.
If Leaders have any queries about this procedure please contact the DC or District Secretary.
It must surely be better to be safe than sorry!

 Explorer Scouts

This new District Section is flourishing. With a start up grant from the District, a wide range of new equipment has been purchased, concentrating on the procurement of items needed for outdoor pursuits. A full programme of scouting activities has been arranged suitable only for youngsters aged fourteen upwards. As a result of the hard work and dedication of their Leaders the Explorer Scout Section has twenty five young people, who regularly attend meetings.

The Explorer Scouts meet on Friday evenings at Someries District Headquarters Applecroft Road. For more information please contact Kevin Philpott or Mick Jones.

Barclay's Bank

We are advised that Barclays bank now have a new stipulation that there can only be three signatories on a community account. As this would mean that it would be difficult for the District Treasurer to be a named signatory it is recommended that Groups concerned change their bankers.

(e-mail received 04th October 2002).

JOTI 2002 logoWorld Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI 19-20 October) is an opportunity for Scouts and Guides to communicate with other Scouts and Guides from around the world using the Internet. Using e-mail contacts and chat room providers Scouts and Guides and their Leaders can use JOTI to make new friends just like those who will be attending the 20th World Scout Jamboree in Thailand.
