St George's Day Parade and Service 2002

Warm spring sunshine welcomed thirteen hundred or so Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venture Scouts, from the three Luton Districts as they assembled in Luton's Telford Way car park for their annual St. George's Day parade. A vast array of flags representing the various Scout Group sections made a bright spectacle as the colours fluttered in the light breeze. The small hands of the Beaver Scout flag bearers found it difficult to hold onto their flag poles as the band of the Boys Brigade played and the parade moved off, heading towards the centre of town. The Red Cross of St. George was proudly carried at the head of the parade. At the saluting base the mayoral chain of office sparkled in the sunlight as the mayor acknowledged the salutes and "eyes right," from the scouts of Lea Valley, Icknield and Someries Districts as they paraded past the Town Hall and on their way to their designated churches.
Someries District took the high road, up Castle Street and into the Catholic Church of "Our Lady Help of Christians." At the front of the Church the Reverend Julie Cox took the Standard from the flag bearer of each section and passed it on to be placed behind the altar. The County Commissioner, Mrs Gillian Nash, smiled broadly and commented favourably on the red cross of St. George that had been sprayed onto the hair and at the red and white ribbons that had been tied at the nape of the necks of two Venture Scout colour escorts. The District Commissioner welcomed everybody to the service and said how pleased he was with the turn out of all sections from Someries District.

Beaver Scouts filled the church with their voices as they joined Denise O'Hara in confirming the Beaver Scout motto "Fun and Friends." They were followed by a Cub Scout who led the Cub Scouts in renewing their promise and then a Scout asked all members of the Scout Section and Leaders to stand and renew their Scout Promise.

The theme throughout the service was the overcoming of evil. The reverend Cox, Curate at St. Christopher's Church, cited the story of St. George slaying the Dragon and encouraged the congregation to produce an almost deafening response as they shouted out "GOOD WILL OVERCOME BAD".
