The Group was first formed on January 23rd 1950 and known as 67th
Bedfordshire, 30th Luton, sponsored by St Mary's Church Sundon. In 1958 plans were
made to build their own headquarters in co-operation with the Guide Unit that met at St
Mary's Church. In 1960 the land was sub-leased from St.Mary's church, who leased the
land from SKF Ballbearing Company, and their own headquarters was built. A
"Scout and Guide Hut Committee" was formed to run and maintain it. In the
late 1960's Luton area was split into four Districts and the Group became known as the
"8th Chiltern". The Group continued to flourish through the '60's and 70's
with two Cub Packs and a Scout Troop.
In 1984 the Luton are was reorganised into three Districts, Chiltern
District being disbanded, and the Group joined Icknield District and became known as
"St Mary's Scout Group". Also in 1984 a Beaver section was introduced into
the Group.
By popular demand for Scouting in the area, the 151st Bedfordshire, 50th
Luton, St John the Apostle Scout Group was formed in nearby Sundon Park. Later in
1969 the Group was renamed as the "1st Chiltern" and again in 1984 to "St
John the Apostle Scout Group".
In 1990 the Group merged with our neighbouring Group, St John's, to become
known by as "Sundon Scout Group".
